Banned for 21 years by Soviet authorities, this remarkable human drama shocked the censors with its bold themes of anti-Semitism and women's rights. Set in 1920 during the Russian Civil War, the story follows the austere Claudia, whose military career as a Red Army Commander is jeopardized when she becomes pregnant by a comrade. She moves in with a poor Jewish family in the countryside until the child is born. Initially hostile to the family's religion and peasant ways, she soon finds herself softening and appreciating the cultural differences they have as well as the common bonds they all share. After the child is born, she faces the difficult choice of staying or rejoining the army.
