Birds of Paradise by Spanish artist Ángela Suárez is avibrant photobook which began as a personal project documenting women with wild hair colours and took off on social media becoming a community-sourced record of electric blues, cotton-candypinks, hazard oranges and a rainbow of hues in between.
The bright book is a casual documentary of eccentricity, an ode to the brave and bold styles found on walks around the photographer’s homeland and beyond. Catalysed by Suárez’s return to Spain at the start of the pandemic, this collection of photos records fleeting moments of connection in isolation, capturing the small miracles of everyday counters. ‘Some details of people’s appearance that might once have gone unnoticed suddenly carried much of a person’s personal expression’,she writes in an original introduction to the book.
