The photographer Hans Gedda is a master at depicting life in people, that which crackles and glitters. Pages that may be unexpected for the viewer, and perhaps even for the person depicted. They are not always the most flattering angles, but they always carry a truth.
In Life Plates you can find several of the iconic portraits, from Nelson Mandela and Evert Taube to Tove Jansson and Andy Warhol. It is a reflection of a contemporary era in change – the photographer’s sensitive eye follows and records. But it is also a collection of portraits that speak to something deeply human in all of us.
Hans Gedda was born in 1942 in Flen. He received a camera from his father for Christmas when he was twelve and immediately felt that it was his instrument. The portrait of a free Nelson Mandela in 1990, with a clenched fist on his forehead, made him world famous.
