Based on the 2008 siege that saw four gunmen take the inhabitants of Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace hotel hostage for four days, Hotel Mumbai is a carefully constructed story of interweaving narratives. Dev Patel is one of the restaurants servers, waiting on Armie Hammer’s American businessman and Jason Isaac’s underhand Russian businessman. Playing cat and mouse against the terrorists demands, scenes of unbearable tension play out.

Rather than solely focusing on the Westerners, the plot gives equal weight to guests, gunmen and hotel staff, telling a surprisingly deep tale of class in modern India. Like the work of Paul Greengrass, this thriller wrings genuine thrills from a careful realisation of the events as they unfolded.
