For this special Winter edition of i-D“The Darker Issue”, guest editor and polymathic Venice Biennale Gold Lion-winning artist Arthur Jafa has commissioned and curated the entire print magazine.

This issue, fronted by a new, original reworking of Arthur’s iconic artwork ‘Le Rage’, is the first to be guest-edited by an artist and offers a deep dive into his visionary mind and incredible creative universe.

As a filmmaker, photographer, creative director and artist Arthur has worked with Kanye West, Virgil Abloh, exhibited across the world from the Venice Biennale to the Serpentine in London and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and helped create the landmark work of Black cinema Daughters of the Dust, as well as directing music videos of Solange Knowles and Kanye west. His landmark films The White Album and Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death is one of the most famous works of video art to emerge in the 21st century.

This issue of the magazine is a dive into his visionary mind and incredible creative universe. Shot across multiple cities and by the biggest names in photography — from Inez and Vinoodh to Mario Sorrenti to Nick Knight and Steven Klein — the issue will immerse you in the polymathic artist’s world; featuring fellow his collaborators, artists, filmmakers, musicians, cult heroes, underground legends and mainstream stars who feed into Arthur’s world.
