In a documentary on our society as it enters a new technological age, Werner Herzog explores the effect of the Internet – as well as its history and future – and the wonders of robotics.
Herzog does not himself use a phone (smart or otherwise) and rarely goes online. Ironically this makes him the perfect choice to examine the impact connected technology is having on our lives. Neither celebration nor condemnation, Herzog’s exploration includes volunteering for tech pioneer Elon Musk’s mission to Mars and looking at technological developments that could lead to breakthroughs in medical research.
Most affecting of all are the questions asked about the dark side of the web: can we trust those who understand this technology not to misuse it? On a planet still governed by nature’s laws, what if our online infrastructure were completely wiped out by natural disaster?
