En gammal ap-prins lider skeppsbrott och blir strandad på en för honom ny och okänd plats. Skadad och vilse upptäcks han av den unge Tom. Tom visar prinsen ett samhälle han aldrig ens kunnat drömma om; en helt ny värld. Men alla är inte nöjda med den nya gästens närvaro och är istället rädda för att han kommer att förändra deras trygga liv.
Den franska animatörveteranen Jean-Francois Laguionie (Tavlan) har skapat en resa som utforskar vad som definierar oss. En filosofisk berättelse som också är ett äventyr, en resa mellan två världar där apans humanism och människans kalkylerande intelligens ger perspektiv på tillvaron. En högaktuell film som på ett smart och tilltalande sätt tangerar ämnen som främlingsfientlighet, samvaro, medkänsla och förståelse.
