The Nightingale (Blu-Ray)

From the director of The Babadook, Jennifer Kent, comes a blood-soaked, radical redress of history. Set in Colonial Tasmania during the brutal Black Wars, Clare (Aisling Franciosi) is indentured to Lieutenant Hawkins (Sam Claflin), denied the right to rejoin her husband and child.

When Hawkins commits an act of sexual violence upon her, she hires indigenous guide Billy (Baykali Ganambarr) to stalk him and his company and enact revenge.

A special jury prize winner at Venice, Kent’s film is unflinching in realising the forces that drove colonisation of Australia and Clare’s mission of vengeance. Every bit as unsettling as The Babadook, it’s a feminist horror that also asks deep questions about race.
