Libyen 1942. Efter att landet invaderats av nazisterna får den brittiske kaptenen Anson i uppdrag att köra en ambulans med personal genom den obarmhärtigt heta öknen till Alexandria. Kaptenens nerver är redan tidigare söndertrasade, ambulansen är närmast skrotfärdig och rutten går rakt genom fiendens linjer. Ständigt drabbade av minerade områden, pansarkolonner, kvicksand och en stigande oro över att en av dem är tysk spion hålls hoppet i liv tack vare en enda hägrande tanke – en iskall öl i Alexandria!
En iskall i Alexandria klassas som ett av de bästa krigsäventyr som gjorts och innehåller en av filmhistoriens mest berömda scener, vilken aktualiserats på senare år i en reklamfilm för Carlsberg. J. Lee Thompson (Kanonerna på Navarone, Cape Fear) har regisserat med John Mills (Oscarbelönad för Ryans dotter) i huvudrollen.
