Michael Haneke is one of contemporary cinema’s most provocative and challenging directors. Like his previous features Amour, The White Ribbon and Hidden, Happy End is an incisive and bitingly satirical exploration of middle class life, and the Laurents are a very Haneke clan. The ageing patriarch (played with gusto by Amour’s Jean-Louis Trintignant) is keen to depart this world.
But Haneke employs his despondency to explore prejudices that lies beneath the veneer of civility. It makes for compelling, provocative cinema.
