Bland Anton Tjechovs pjäser betraktas fyra som odödliga klassiker: Måsen [1896], Onkel Vanja [1899-1900], Tre systrar [1901] och Körsbärsträdgården, vars urpremiär ägde rum kort efter författarens död i tuberkulos 1904.
I dessa pjäser återfinns några av världsdramatikens stora roller – den plikttrogne onkel Vanja, de tre systrarna som fastnat i provinsen och drömmer sig tillbaka till det underbara livet i Moskva, fru Ranevskaja, adelskvinnan som försöker rädda sitt gods och dess körsbärsodlingar från en oundviklig samhällsutveckling, den längtande Nina och den olycklige Konstantin. Någon uttalad huvudroll finns sällan hos Tjechov, som snarare bygger sina pjäser på stämningar, känslor och dynamiken i hela ensemblen.

ANTON TJECHOV [1860-1904] var en rysk läkare, författare och dramatiker, vars pjäser spelas i ständigt nya uppsättningar världen över. Vid sidan av dramatiken kom hans noveller att på många sätt påverka den moderna prosakonsten.
