POPEYE magazine is the “Magazine for City Boys”. The founders printed this on the cover of the magazine when it debuted in 1976. What’s a “city boy”? The term doesn’t appear in the dictionary and no expert panel could define it. So we felt we should explore every aspect of what this “city boy” might be. After decades of debate, it still makes for a topic of lively discussion. It can be a style or a way of thinking. To get an idea of what makes a city boy, read POPEYE magazine.
In this issue:
“Bands always make us excited!
For the first music feature in a while, POPEYE has decided to focus only on bands. Even though it’s now possible to create and deliver music on your own, I feel like there are more and more interesting bands around the world. This is something I felt when I made a feature on my travels around Asia this summer and visited each of the cities I visited.
So, what kind of bands do we honestly think are the best? They play with people over 10,000km away, perform together with people in their 20s and 60s, and actually have other jobs. They transcend borders, generations, and preconceived notions and enjoy music freely. This issue’s “Band Special” brings together about 200 such bands. We’ll introduce the contents of this magazine little by little.”
