En kvinna, hennes man och deras dotter ger sig ut på en road trip i Tornedalen. Tanken är att besöka det sanatorium där hennes mormor var inlagd i två omgångar på 1950-talet. Kvinnan vill se platserna där så många människor vårdades och dog i en sjukdom som angrep lungorna. Resan blir också en minnesresa tillbaka till hennes egen uppväxt, präglad av längtan och viljan att skapa sig ett sammanhang. Samtidigt har en ny farsot börjat sprida sig i samhället.
Det som börjar som en skildring av en avlägsen tid och ett sätt att närma sig ett avlägset trauma får plötslig skrämmande aktualitet. Vad händer om en mamma dör och ett barn blir föräldralöst? Eller om sjukdom drabbar ett barn? Om man blir fråntagen sitt språk? Eller om en isvak brister, mitt i mörkaste vintern?
Hur ska man kunna leva när man aldrig kan ta någonting för givet och när smärtan som konstituerar en människa är ständigt närvarande? Precis som ljuset det som aldrig väjer.
Snö och potatis är en roman om moderskap och död, och om hur orons skuggor kastas över generationerna.
