Issue n° 34 of The Gentlewoman is fronted by Coco Gauff, the 22-year-old American reshaping women’s tennis. Two Grand Slam titles in and with her game rebuilt from scratch, Coco is playing the best tennis of her life.
Coco made her name — and history — at 15 when she beat her childhood hero Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon 2019. “My life changed in a day,” she tells Stuart Brumfitt in our 12-page profile, photographed by Deo Suveera & Pamela Dimitrov and styled by Helena Hiegemann.
This year Coco had her best-ever Wimbledon, and last week reached the semi-finals of the US Open. “I feel like 25 is when women start to hit their peak,” she says. “I try not to be too hard on myself right now, knowing that I do have a lot to look forward to.”
As Coco hits her stride, she’s on a mission to keep her forbears, Black tennis pioneers like Althea Gibson, from being forgotten. “With tennis being a predominantly white sport, you don’t really see people who look like us too often,” she says.
