James Stewart gör vad han ansåg vara en av sin karriärs bästa roller i The Glenn Miller Story. Filmen följer jazzlegenden ända från 1929 då han som fattig musiker tvingades pantsätta sin trombon, vidare via hans frenetiska jakt efter det unika sound som skulle bli hans signum och enorma framgång, fram till tiden då han for runt i Europa för att med sin musik gjuta mod i de allierade styrkorna. Ett uppdrag som också innebar hans tragiska död.
Den Oscarbelönade (bästa ljud) filmen var en av de tio största biosuccéerna i USA 1954 och dess soundtrack parkerade sig som etta på LP-listan i tio veckor. I småroller möter vi andra musikaliska storheter som Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa och Frances Langford.
