For avid readers and the uninitiated alike, The Happy Reader is a magazine-shaped book club to inspire and entertain.
A collaboration between Penguin Classics and Fantastic Man, the concept is simple: the first half is a long-form interview with a notable book fanatic and the second half explores one classic Book of the Season from an array of surprising and invigorating angles.
In this issue:
Sarah Jessica Parker, the actress, publisher and fashion icon, is a prolific and wide-ranging reader. Interviewed by Paul Flynn at the height of lockdown for The Happy Reader, the Sex and the City star talks candidly about subjects such as her life, her career, her postponed Broadway show, her thoughts on Sally Rooney, and — of course — the vagaries of her reading life in general. She’s photographed by Roe Ethridge in Amaganesett, Long Island
Our Book of the Season this time around, JAPANESE GHOST STORIES, is centre of gravity to a series of hallucinatory artworks; correspondents around the world compile an obsessive yet fragmentary portrait of the book’s odd author, Lafcadio Hearn. Contributors include Lieko Shiga, John Self, Travis Elborough, Bess Lovejoy and Moeko Fujii.
