Type / Not Type

Type / Not Type is a series of collages made from illustrations by Jonas Banker, graphic designer at Swedish design studio BankerWessel, and hand drawn letterforms, combining typography and abstract images. The material comes from unused designs that were still worth exploring. Having these illustrations already on the computer provided an easy starting point. The result became a mix of typography and abstract images.

The images were drawn directly on the computer at a low resolution, keeping the design process quick and direct. The collages were not originally intended for publication. The aim was simply to work without a specific goal, enjoying the process of moving shapes, colours, and letterforms around. Working at a low resolution made it easier to keep the pace up and avoid getting caught up in details.

Working without a set plan and letting the work direct itself and lead the way, each session lasted about thirty minutes. After that, concentration and spontaneity began to fade. As soon as the work started to feel too refined or deliberately polished, the process stopped.
